Frequently asked questions

What are the most common symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders?

If you are suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, symptoms usually include abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, unintentional weight loss, acid reflux, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, loss of appetite, bowel incontinence and fatigue. If you are suffering from these symptoms and think you may have irritable bowel syndrome, gastroenteritis or are suffering with indigestion or constipation, a Mayfield Clinic GP can help.

What kinds of treatments are available for gastrointestinal disorders?

There is no single medication or lifestyle change that works for everyone with stomach or digestive problems so a personalised treatment approach often using a mix of medication and diet changes is often required. There are also several things you can try to alleviate your symptoms. Homemade meals using fresh ingredients and avoiding fatty, spicy and processed foods can help. Reducing your intake of alcohol, fizzy drinks and caffeine can also help. Relaxing, exercising and keeping a diary to identify the triggers of your symptoms can also be beneficial.

When should I see a GP about my stomach and digestion problems?

If you are suffering with any of the symptoms associated with stomach and digestion problems, it is a good idea to see a GP who will be able to assess your health to identify a cause of your symptoms and work with you to develop a treatment plan. During your GP appointment, you will be asked about your symptoms, when they occur, how often they occur and what the potential triggers may be. It is a good idea to start a diary of your symptoms and the context surrounding them to assist your GP with their assessment. Your GP may also feel your stomach to check for any lumps or swelling.

Can I use the service if I am hard of hearing?

Yes. Please book an in-person or video appointment with a GP online, as this will provide scope for lip-reading. In-person GP appointments also enable you to communicate in writing with the GP.

Can I use the service if I am visually impaired?

Yes. Please contact the practice on 01865423425, press option 9 and identify yourself as visually impaired. We will assist you in booking a telephone appointment with one of our GPs, who you can see in person, or who can then call you at the time of the appointment.
