Frequently asked questions

How can a GP help with my cold or flu?

If you have been suffering from cold or flu symptoms for over three weeks and they aren’t improving, a Mayfield Clinic GP can help you. If your cold is also causing chest pain, trouble breathing, congestion or headaches that won’t go away, pain in your sinuses, pain to swallow, thick mucus in your cough or vomiting, you should visit a GP. Asthma, sinus infections, whooping cough, pneumonia, tonsillitis and other infections may be causing your prolonged cold and flu symptoms so your doctor will want to rule out any other health conditions. Your condition will be assessed and if needed treatment will be provided. Please note that we will not prescribe antibiotics to treat the flu. A GP can help to protect against the flu by giving you a flu vaccine. It is recommended to have the vaccine every year.

Should I get an annual flu vaccine?

The flu vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect against flu. The best time to have the vaccine is during the autumn or early winter which is just before flu begins to spread. The flu vaccine is particularly recommended to those who are over 50, have other health conditions, are pregnant or who work in frontline health or social care where picking up the flu or passing the flu on to vulnerable people is more likely. It is not recommended to have the flu vaccine if you have had a serious allergic reaction to the vaccine in the past. At Mayfield Clinic we offer two type of vaccination, a standard intramuscular vaccine for those aged under 65 and a Fluad Tetra vaccine for those aged 65 or older.

How can I avoid getting colds or the flu?

Colds are viruses which are spread from person to person by germs in coughs and sneezes which can live for 24 hours. To avoid catching a cold you should regularly wash your hands, use tissues when you cough and sneeze and dispose of these straight away. Staying generally fit and healthy will also help to prevent severe cold symptoms. The flu is often worse than the common cold and symptoms tend to be more intense and begin more abruptly. The best way to protect yourself from catching the flu is to have the flu vaccine.

Can I use the service if I am hard of hearing?

Yes. Please book an in-person or video appointment with a GP online, as this will provide scope for lip-reading. In-person GP appointments also enable you to communicate in writing with the GP.

Can I use the service if I am visually impaired?

Yes. Please contact the practice on 01865423425, press option 9 and identify yourself as visually impaired. We will assist you in booking a telephone appointment with one of our GPs, who you can see in person, or who can then call you at the time of the appointment.
