Cognitive Assessments of Adults
We are happy to be able to offer cognitive assessments using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. This assessment provides us with the most advanced measure of cognitive ability in individuals aged between 18-90 years. A cognitive assessment examines how the brain controls thinking skills, including verbal comprehension, working memory, processing speed, and perceptual reasoning. The assessment is a way of finding out information about how your brain is working in these four areas, and how that relates to your daily life and activities. A cognitive assessment is very useful in identifying any deficits in the areas listed, as well as with the full scale IQ.
A cognitive assessments should be requested by a doctor, and we will require a referral in order to carry out this assessment. The referral should include any medical information that may impact your cognitive abilities, including any underlying conditions, and current medications.
Once we have accepted the referral, we will carry out a pre-assessment to gather relevant background information prior to carrying out the cognitive tests. We will ask you why you want a cognitive assessment, and what you are hoping to do with the findings. The total time for the pre-assessment and testing is two hours. An optional 30 minute follow up appointment can be offered to discuss the findings. Once the cognitive testing is completed we will analyse and score your results, you will then receive a report detailing the findings. This report will cover all four areas of cognitive functioning, detailing the significant strengths and weaknesses in your profile. If relevant we will make recommendations for intervention, or suggest any further investigations that may be indicated.
(Please note: a cognitive assessment is not a diagnostic tool).
